Everything you need to know about Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

Disney's newest attraction is officially open! Let me tell you everything you'll need to know about visiting this awesome new roller coaster, in Epcot's first "Other World Pavilion".

I was lucky enough to snag a passholder preview to see Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind before it officially opened, and wrote a No Spoilers blog giving readers a glimpse into the seating, the wait times for the preview, and how the ride effected motion sickness.

Everything from here on out is a potential Spoiler, if you want to go into the ride blind like I did click away!

If you're still here lets get into it!

The Theming

As you enter the line queue you'll be greeted with a sign that says "Welcome Terrans" and you will then walk into the Wonders of Xandar, where in Xandar and the Nova Corps are working to establish a connection with Earth. From the moment you enter the first room you feel like you're stepping into another world. The first room of the line queue features a massive circular screen on the ceiling, the pictures move and change based on what the Xandarian tour guide is discussing about Earth. The next room has multiple display cases with props including miniature space ships, and Nova Corps Uniforms. You can also see Groot and Rocket being interviewed on a number of holographic-like screens.

In the third room you'll stand in large group and be greeted on screen by the Nova Corps Commander. She will discuss the cosmic generator, an advanced piece of Xandarian technology that creates jump points that act as short cuts between distant points in space.

You are then greeted by Centurion Tal Marik, played by Terry Crews; he will guide you into the teleportation room. Before you can be teleported the Cosmic Generator is stolen, and the Guardians of the Galaxy are called to help. You'll get to see Peter Quill, Gamora, Groot, Rocket, and Drax.

This is when a massive Celestial being shows up and he is holding the Cosmic Generator, He says the terrans species has failed, and then uses the generator to teleport through time "erase an error" and tells the guardians that their time is over. The Guardians enlist your help, and you continue through to the ride loading area.

The seats are spacious, as with most Disney rides the seats are inclusively designed so that most plus size people can also enjoy the ride. This is Disney's first ever reverse launch, as the ride begins you zoom backwards and up, (I would compare it to how Expedition Everest reverses at the tracks dead end). From there you twist, and swivel through space and time with the Guardians of the Galaxy. It wouldn't be a mission with the Guardians without music, there are six different songs you could experience including:

  • "September" by Earth, Wind and Fire

  • "Disco Inferno" by the Trammps

  • "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears

  • "One Way or Another" by Blondie

  • "I Ran (So Far Away)" by A Flock of Seagulls

  • "Conga" by Gloria Estefan

The ride lasts about 3 minutes, and when I tell you that you're in for a whirlwind of fun, I mean that literally. Just look at my ride picture, my face is somewhere in that pile of hair being tossed around.

The Best Point of Views

For the best experience on this ride I have a couple different pointers. When you enter the first room where Nova Prime greets you, you'll have a better view standing towards the middle-back of the crowd as the screens are above the doors you'll enter next. In the second room where you'll be teleported, your best view is all the way at the front of the room. On the ride I believe your best view will be in one of the middle seats on the coaster, as the story goes on you'll have the best point of view not coming in from the front or the rear.

Virtual Queue & Lightning Lane

For the time being Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind will not allow guests to walk up and enter the line. To access the ride guests can either join the virtual queue or purchase lighting lane. Both can be done through the My Disney Experience App.

For Virtual Queue guests who have reservations for Epcot can try to join at 7am, you do not need to be in the park when joining the queue at this time. The next slot is at 1pm, guests must be in Epcot to try to join at this time. Occasionally, an additional time slot will open at 6pm for Disney Deluxe Resort guests if Epcot has extended hours for those guests. Punctuality is key, these passes will go quick during each window. Getting a boarding group via the virtual window does not guarantee guests will be called to ride, but from my experience every time I've gotten a boarding group on any virtual queue I've been able to ride the ride.

For lightning lane, guests who are staying on Disney property can purchase their lightning lane passes at 7am. All off property guests will be able to purchase at park opening. Slot are limited, and the price for individual lightning lane for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind has not been released yet. Currently, the highest price for an individual ride is $15.
